English
Discovering Romania’s Hidden Gem:
Vidraru Dam and Vidraru Lake
Tucked away in the heart of the
Carpathian Mountains, Vidraru Dam and the serene Vidraru Lake stand as one of
Romania’s most captivating destinations-offering breathtaking views,
adrenaline-packed activities, and a rich blend of engineering and nature.
Whether you’re a thrill-seeker, nature lover, or simply an admirer of majestic
landscapes, this destination promises an unforgettable experience.
A
Marvel of Engineering
Constructed in 1966 on the Argeș
River, Vidraru Dam was considered a remarkable feat of engineering for its
time. At 166 meters (545 feet) high and 305 meters (1,000 feet) long, it was
among the largest arch dams in Europe when completed. The dam’s construction
took over five years and required the excavation of approximately 1.77 million
cubic meters of rock.
Its primary purpose is hydroelectric
power generation, but over time, the area has evolved into a beloved spot for
tourism and outdoor recreation. The dam’s curved design allows it to hold back
the deep, crystal-clear waters of Vidraru Lake, creating a reservoir that
stretches over 10 kilometers (6 miles) in length.

The
Stunning Vidraru Lake
Formed by the damming of the Argeș
River, Vidraru Lake lies nestled between the rugged slopes of the
Făgăraș and Ghica Mountains. The tranquil blue waters mirror the sky and
surrounding forests, making it a popular spot for photography, boating, and
hiking.
The lake’s calm surface hides a
depth of over 150 meters (492 feet) at its deepest point. Around the lake,
visitors can find scenic rest areas, picnic spots, and trails that provide
panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. The fresh mountain air and the
peaceful soundscape make it an ideal escape from city life.

Things
to Do Around Vidraru
1. Visit the Prometheus Statue - Perched dramatically above the dam, a giant statue of Prometheus holding a
lightning bolt watches over the valley. Symbolizing the power of electricity
and human ingenuity, this 10 meter high statue is a favorite photo spot and a
short climb away from the dam’s viewing platform.
2. Drive on the Transfăgărășan
Highway - Described by Top Gear as “the best road in the world,” the
Transfăgărășan Highway winds its way through the mountains just above Vidraru
Lake. It offers one of Europe’s most scenic drives, with dizzying hairpin
turns, tunnels, and dramatic alpine views.
3. Hiking and Nature Walks - Numerous trails begin near the lake, leading through lush forests, waterfalls,
and alpine meadows. These trails offer opportunities for wildlife spotting,
especially in the early morning or late afternoon.
4. Boating and Kayaking - During the summer months, visitors can rent small boats or kayaks to explore
the lake from a different perspective. The smooth water and quiet coves make it
ideal for a relaxing paddle.
5. Bungee Jumping for the Brave - For adrenaline lovers, the dam offers one of the highest bungee jumping points
in Romania - right off the side of the dam itself! This is not for the faint of
heart, but the free fall against the backdrop of the mountains is a memory
you’ll never forget.

When to Visit - The best time to visit Vidraru Dam and Lake is between May and October, when the weather is mild, and the Transfăgărășan Road is fully open (typically from late June to early October due to snow at higher elevations). Autumn is particularly picturesque, with the surrounding forests painted in fiery shades of orange, red, and yellow.
How to Get There - Vidraru is located about 160 kilometers (100 miles) northwest of Bucharest and can be reached by car in roughly 3-4 hours. The most direct route is via the DN7 and DN7C national roads. Public transportation options are limited, so renting a car is recommended for flexibility and ease of travel.
