Discover Royal Elegance: Peleș and Pelișor Castles in Sinaia, Romania
Tucked away in the heart of the Carpathian Mountains, the picturesque town of Sinaia is home to two of Romania's most iconic royal residences: Peleș Castle and Pelișor Castle. These architectural masterpieces offer visitors a rare glimpse into the opulence, history, and charm of Romania’s royal past. Whether you're a history enthusiast, an architecture lover, or simply in search of a scenic cultural escape, these two castles should top your travel itinerary.
Peleș Castle – A Neo-Renaissance Jewel
Commissioned by King Carol I of Romania and built between 1873 and 1914, Peleș Castle is a fairy-tale palace that seems plucked straight from a storybook. Surrounded by dense forests and perched at the foot of the Bucegi Mountains, the castle’s striking Neo-Renaissance style blends Gothic revival, German Baroque, and Italian influences, making it one of the most beautiful and unique castles in Europe.

Inside, over 160 rooms are adorned with intricate wood carvings, stained glass, Murano crystal chandeliers, and some of the finest examples of European craftsmanship. The Hall of Honor, with its carved walnut walls and stained-glass ceiling, is a highlight, as is the Royal Armory, which houses a remarkable collection of medieval weapons and armor.

Peleș was not only a royal summer retreat but also the first European castle fully powered by electricity and central heating - a testament to the modern vision of Romania’s early monarchy.
Pelișor Castle – The Art Nouveau Heart of the Royal Family
Just a short walk from Peleș Castle stands the more intimate Pelișor Castle, built between 1899 and 1902. Commissioned by King Carol I for his nephew and heir, Ferdinand, and his wife, Queen Marie, Pelișor reflects a completely different atmosphere - cozy, elegant, and deeply personal.

Designed in the Art Nouveau style, the interiors of Pelișor are characterized by flowing lines, natural motifs, and a light-filled ambiance. The castle contains 99 rooms, many of which bear Queen Marie’s artistic influence. One of the most remarkable is the Golden Room, where golden leaves and Celtic crosses adorn the walls and ceiling - a clear expression of the Queen’s aesthetic and spiritual values.

Visiting Pelișor offers a more intimate look at royal life, particularly the fascinating story of Queen Marie, one of Romania's most beloved historical figures.
